Loving Your New NBR Extensions? How To Keep Them Protected This Winter

by Ellen Lucas

Winter is coming. If you have new NBR hair extensions, it's time to learn about winter hair care. Winter weather can wreak havoc on your hair extensions, especially if you're not sure how to care for them. Luckily, there are some simple steps you can follow to protect your NBR extensions throughout the winter. Here are four of those steps to help get you started.

Drop the Heat Settings

If you've never had extensions before, you may think you can use the same heat settings as you do on your natural hair. That's not actually the case, especially during the winter. Using high heat settings for your styling tools can cause serious damage to your extensions. In fact, you can end up with singed hair. Once you go outside in the cold weather, your damaged extensions may break. To protect your new extensions, lower the settings on your heated styling tools. Also, be sure that your extensions have had a chance to cool down before you head outside during the winter.

Protect Between Washes

Now that you have NBR extensions, you won't be washing your hair as often. In fact, you should only be washing your extensions about twice a week. If you're used to washing your hair every day, that's going to be a big change for you. You should know that washing your extensions more often than recommended can cause irreparable damage. But, you also want to protect your extensions and keep your natural hair clean between washes. The best way to do that is to use a protective spray throughout the week. The protective spray will safeguard your extensions and keep your hair looking clean.

Use the Right Brushing Methods

During the winter, you'll also want to take care when you brush your new extensions. You may be used to brushing your natural hair from roots to tips. But, that's not the way you should brush your extensions, especially during the winter. Instead, you want to brush your hair from bottom to top, one small section at a time. Also, you want to brush your extensions before you get into the shower. Brushing your extensions before you get into the shower will help to prevent tangles. It will also help to get the natural scalp oils flowing, which is beneficial to your hair and to your extensions during the winter.

Increase the Winter Conditioning

Finally, if you want to protect your new NBR extensions this winter, be sure to increase the conditioning. You'll be running the heater in your home more often, which means the air will be drier than usual. Unfortunately, drier air can suck the moisture right out of your extensions. To avoid damage, make sure you condition your extensions each time you wash your hair. It's also a good idea to use a between-wash spray conditioner on your extensions during the winter.
