How To Care For Synthetic Hair Extensions

by Ellen Lucas

Hair extensions are a great way to create a thicker, or even longer head of hair. Extensions come in numerous shades to match just about any hair color, and they come in natural or synthetic options. Synthetic hair extensions are cheaper than natural extensions, but can be a little more difficult to take care of. To help get more wear out of your synthetic extensions, you'll need to care for them properly. See below for tips on how to care for your synthetic hair extensions.

Washing

Wash your extensions with a mild shampoo that is made for synthetic hair. You can find this type of shampoo at most salon supply stores. A synthetic hair shampoo is gentle enough that it will not strip the color from your extensions, but will get rid of the dirt and oils that can build up from everyday use. Be sure when washing your extensions that you use cold water, as synthetic hair cannot withstand heat very well. Simply wash them in a sink with cold water and add just a few drops of the gentle shampoo.

Drying

Again, synthetic extensions cannot withstand heat, so do not blow-dry your them. A blow-dryer can melt your extensions and ruin them completely. Instead, lay your extensions flat on a table top and allow them to air dry. Do not attempt to towel dry your extensions either, as it can make your extensions frizz and make them unmanageable.

Shine Spray

Use an oil-free shine spray on your synthetic extensions to keep them looking brand new. After washing they can appear dull or dry looking. The oil-free shine spray will bring back the shine, without making them look oily or feel greasy. Spray just a little bit and use a comb to work it through the extensions. The shine spray also helps get rid of tangles that can happen after washing.

Remember to be gentle with your hair extensions. Being too rough with them can cause you to tear the hair out of the clips, so be gentle when washing as well as when combing or brushing through them. Taking good care of your extensions will give them plenty of life. It will save you even more money in the long run, as you won't have to buy new extensions very often.

Opt for some colored extensions if you're feeling adventurous, or keep it simple by matching your extensions to your existing hair color. Whether your hair is thin or short, and no matter what color you choose, these hair extensions can help to transform your entire look.
