5 Common Hair Care Mistakes To Avoid

by Ellen Lucas

Your hair is one of your best assets, so it's important to take good care of it. However, if you are like many women, you've probably not always been so kind to your hair. Seemingly harmless things, like blow-drying your hair or brushing it while it is wet, can do damage over time.

Here are five common hair care mistakes to avoid.

Not Using Heat Protectant

While it's best to avoid heat tools altogether, it isn't practical. When you do decide to straighten or curl your hair, you should always spray a heat protectant on your hair beforehand. This product will shield your hair from the heat, preventing damage. Allow the heat protecting product to sit in your hair for a couple of minutes before you use a heat styling tool.

Skipping Hair Trims

Even if you are trying to grow your hair out, you should still get your hair trimmed every six to eight weeks. If you go too long between haircuts, the ends of your hair can split and suffer damage. When you are getting your hair cut, explain to the hairdresser that you just want half an inch trimmed off your hair.

Washing Your Hair Too Frequently

If you are still washing your hair every day, you are doing your locks a disservice. Shampooing too frequently can strip your hair of its oils, resulting in dryness. Try to wash your hair every other day. If you can go longer in between washes, that's even better.

Towel Drying Your Hair Too Roughly

If you rub your hair with a towel when drying it, you could rough up the cuticle and cause breakage. To avoid this, gently pat your hair dry with a towel.

Skipping Deep Conditioning Treatments

If your hair is in pretty good shape, you may think it is not necessary to deep condition it. However, skipping deep conditioning treatments can dry out your locks over time. To keep your hair shiny and healthy, apply a deep conditioner once a week after you are done shampooing. Let it penetrate in your hair for five to 10 minutes before rinsing it out.

Many people are guilty of these hair care mistakes. However, if you make an effort to take better care of your hair, it will start to look and feel better. If you have additional hair care questions, do not hesitate to ask a hair professional at a local salon, like Divine  Hair Design.
